As parents and teachers we are all concerned that our children and students become wise users of new technologies. We worry about the safety and morality of some Internet sites. We encourage our children to use the World Wide Web to gather information for reports and other school work. . .

. . .yet we spend little time showing our children how to evaluate web sites for validity. This is an important need as more and more information becomes available through the Web daily. Children should not build the impression that, "if it's on the Internet, it has got to be true."

If you have clicked on the link above, and read Alan November's article "The Web -- teaching Zack to think," you can readily see that all that is on the Internet need not be true, or it may be information with a very strong bias.

What November points out to us is that kids often use the Internet without being taught how to use it.

As November further states: "The fact remains that kids will increasingly depend on the Internet for information. As they use the Web, they need to evaluate their findings using several techniques..." [These techniques fall into]...three main categories: Purpose, Author, and Meta-Web Information.
